Round 4 of the 2019 Monster Energy AMA Supercross an FIM World Championship in Oakland was outstanding! The 450SX class remains as unpredictable as ever even though Cooper Webb was able to win his second 450SX main event in a row. However, the day was scattered with performances that had folks changing their fantasy lineups with each passing practice, qualifying session and heat race! Ken Roczen would claim the fastest qualifying time, then Eli Tomac and Joey Savatgy won their 450SX heat races. Nobody really seemed to have the upper hand before the gates slammed down, however once they did it was all Webb! He pulled the holeshot and led every lap on the way to the checkered flag. Now, the 450SX points are crazy with only 4 points separating new point leader Webb from Roczen, Tomac and Marvin Musquin!

Let’s break down the top 10 in the 450SX class from Oakland:

1. Cooper Webb: They say once a racer gets that first win that a certain confidence is awarded to him. This certainly appears to be the case as Webb has held firm control over the field in the past two weeks. He will wear the red plates this weekend in San Diego and has a ton of momentum.

2. Marvin Musquin: Marvin should be the next winner in this division. After finishing 2nd at Round 3, Musquin was even stronger in Oakland and had it not been for a mid race tip over, he may have taken the win. His lingering knee injury appears to be a thing of the past and he is riding to top form.

3. Blake Baggett: The “Where the heck did he come from?” award goes to Mr. Baggett. After rounding the first lap in 11th place, Blake went on the charge slicing through the pack passing riders in bunches through the broken down whoops section. The entire field was jumping their way through, but Baggett was sending it down the left side and hammering them. His ride proved his win in Glendale was no fluke and No. 4 is a threat to win next weekend in San Diego.

4. Eli Tomac: This is a very different Eli Tomac we are seeing in 2019. Steady and consistent, he hasn’t been able to storm through the pack like the last two seasons, but remains only 3 points out of the lead. Tomac started 10th in Oakland and rode well. He could be ready to break out very soon.

5. Ken Roczen: After nailing down the fastest qualifier it was looking like it was going to be Roczen’s night. After starting 6th he made some quick moves and was making a mid race charge when he looked to hit the wall. He lost his flow in the whoops and lost spots to Baggett and Tomac. It’s a long series and like Tomac, Ken is managing it well through four rounds.

6. Dean Wilson: Dean continues to ride very strong and show blazing speed. He was fastest in the first practice session and steady in the main event after starting 7th. It’s a pretty cool story that he is only three points out of the top five in the 450SX through four rounds.

7. Justin Barcia: Perhaps feeling the affects from a huge crash at Round 3, Barcia was just so so in Oakland. He started 9th and rode well, but was unable to cut through the pack. With another week to heal up, look for Bam Bam to be up to full song this weekend in San Diego.

8. Justin Brayton: Justin put in a quiet but strong ride coming from 15th and racing into 8th. That’s been the story for Brayton so far in 2019 as he carries an 11.3 average starting position. With a holeshot, Justin could surprise.

9. Chad Reed: Another 450SX main event and another top 10 in the record books for Reed. He had some drama in the main event landing on Aaron Plessinger’s downed machine after the wall jump and going down, but got up and continued to charge. Still a fan favorite. Still riding very well.

10. Justin Bogle: Bogle blasted off to a great start in the main event and was riding well for a few laps before he began to fall through the field. He has the speed, but needs to work on the 20min. Bogle is one of those guys that has the talent to land on the podium.

250SX

The 250SX Western Regional division is almost as hot as the 450SX class with only five points separating the top four racers. Oakland saw an intense main event for these guys with series leader Colt Nichols nailing the holeshot and battling with Adam Cianciarulo in the opening laps. Adam was able to get by, but was unable to pull away. Lap after lap was a game of cat and mouse and at times it looked like Cianciarulo was going to make a big mistake, but he stayed strong all the way to victory. Dylan Ferrandis was extremely fast again, but couldn’t make up the distance after a 7th place start. Nichols has been the most consistent and will carry the red plates into Round 5 in San Diego. It will be a huge race for this class as the 250SX Western Region takes a seven week break after the checkered flag.

So, wow! After four rounds only 4 points separate four racers in the 450SX class! Tomac, Roczen and Musquin have yet to win and it looks like Cooper Webb is very much for real. It’s a great time to be a fan of Monster Energy Supercross, so let’s get ready for more madness this Saturday in San Diego!
